Van Gogh had long wanted to capture the night — not with traditional dark tones like black and grey, but with rich, vibrant colors. What made this piece even more unique was his decision to paint the café terrace in Arles directly on-site, at night, under the glow of gas lamps. He believed the true character of nighttime colors could only be felt and expressed in their natural setting, not under daylight.

Often referred to as the father of the Taos art colony, Cincinnati-born artist Joseph Henry Sharp received his training at the McMicken School of Design (later the Cincinnati Art Academy), and continued his studies in Belgium, Germany, and France. Around 1900, he began creating portraits of Native Americans across the northern Plains. This particular piece, painted at Pine Ridge, South Dakota, is part of the Johnie Griffin Collection and is currently on view in the PPHM Southwestern Gallery.

The painting captures the sparkling stars reflected on the gently rippling water, with gaslights from the town shimmering across the river. A quiet couple walks along the shore, adding a touch of intimacy. The deep blues and golden yellows create a dreamlike atmosphere, revealing van Gogh’s fascination with night, light, and the emotional power of color.

Title: Starry Night
Creator: Vincent van Gogh
Medium: Oil on canvas
Van Gogh painted this vivid seascape outdoors, using quick, expressive brushstrokes to capture the ever-shifting colors of the sea. He once described the water as being "like mackerel"—constantly changing, sometimes green or purple, other times blue, and in the next moment reflecting shades of pink or grey. (Letter to Theo van Gogh, 3/4 June 1888) If you look closely, you can even spot grains of sand embedded in the paint, caught while he was working in the open air.

Title: The Sea at Les Saintes
Creator: Vincent van Gogh
Medium: Oil on canvas
In Shipping by Moonlight, Monet paints a quiet harbor bathed in silver moonlight. With soft, fluid brushstrokes, he captures the stillness of the night and the subtle glow of boats drifting across calm waters. The moon casts its light gently over the scene, blurring the line between sea and sky. It’s a painting not just of ships—but of silence, reflection, and the hush of night.

Through layered blue tones and softly flowing forms, the works create a quiet, emotionally charged atmosphere. Rather than depicting recognizable subjects, these pieces invite introspection and personal interpretation through their use of color and shape.
The color blue represents not only the vastness of sky and sea, but also the expansiveness of thought and the depth of feeling. Blue Shapes reveals a poetic phase in her artistic journey—one that pushed the boundaries of modernism and imbued abstraction with profound emotional resonance.
